Nutrigenomics and functional testing

Never before has personalised medicine been so accessible. Nutrigenomics, also known as Nutrigenetics, is the most exciting topic I have studied. The design of a personalised nutritional and lifestyle programme that meets your unique genetic profile and nutrient requirement is the future Gold Standard in health care. I believe we are on the precipice of a real evolution towards the measurement and management of genetic expression. Genetic testing alongside a full functional medicine assessment and a functional nutritional evaluation allows the possibility of a unique programme just for you. There isn’t a one-size fits all when it comes to health, we all have our own unique blueprint. To live life to the full we need to know that blueprint.

I have been using genetic testing for around eighteen months now with amazing results, in some of my saddest and most complex cases. I cannot put into words the rewards that feeling brings to my clients and myself. Would you like to have that feeling? Would you or someone you know like to experience the magic of this type of change? If so then please fell free to read on and if at the end you would like to know more please let me know so we can talk through any questions you may still have. For now I will tell you why I feel this approach holds promise.

You are a unique individual. Your overall health is determined by the interaction of your genes with the environment you find yourself in. The food you eat, toxins you are exposed to, whether you exercise, smoke, drink, all influence your health by up or down regulating your genes or even switching them on and off. This is a process that is meant to happen in order for our species to survive. In Darwinian terms, this is survival of the (fittest) most adaptable. Sometimes these genetic changes, or SNiPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) as we affectionately call them, change to support our survival but then our environment changes (toxic exposure, fast food, stress) and the gene expression is no longer suitable for that environment. This is when ill health starts to prevail and this aberrant genetic code can then be passed down, each generation becoming weaker until Mother Nature changes the plan again or we learn to adapt. How amazing is that?

Western medicine has taught us to be afraid of our genes. We have only previously heard of genes in a negative way, such as in Cystic Fibrosis or Downs Syndrome. The truth is we all have lots of SNiPs but they don’t all make us sick. If we treat them well they can support us into a long and healthy life with vitality and happiness. Armed with the knowledge of your own SNiPs you can become empowered to take control of your own health in a way we never thought possible. But this is not just about making people better, it is also about prevention. Never in the history of mankind have we had so much health knowledge at our disposal.

Methylation:

Methylation is a key function of the body. It is a system where the body adds and removes methyl groups at specific points in the cycle. The role of methyl groups is to repair DNA and to repair and direct other functions in the body. Without methylation a toxic product called Homocysteine can rise, creating inflammation and cell breakdown. Methylation also helps to make those lovely brain chemicals called neurotransmitters; such as Dopamine, Adrenaline and Noradrenaline. If these are out of balance mood, sleep, concentration and weight can all be affected. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell the various organs of the body to perform their respective roles. Imagine the chaos when these are unbalanced.

Methylation also helps the body to make energy more efficiently. It also produces Myelin, which protects and cushions our nerves. It builds and repairs our cell membranes. There are a number of nutrigenomic Guru’s, two of whom are Dr Ben Lynch of www.MTHFR.net and Amy Yasco www.dramyyasco.com . I have undertaken Training with Dr Lynch and studied the work of others such as Jeff Bland, Matt Ridley, Dr William Walsh, K. John Morrow Jr, James C Roberts and others. These people are true pioneers in the field.

Have I fuelled your interest in being tested?

I hope I have given you food for thought. If I have then the next step is to consider how to take this forward. I am trained to work with you in interpreting and designing your unique programme. I use a number of laboratories to do this. Testing for a specific se of SNiPs – say for example a DetoxiGenomic profile or a Cardiovascular profile can be done through Genova Diagnostics laboratories www.gdx.net/uk/ or Laboratoire reunis https://www.labo.lu/en/lab-tests/integrative-medicine.html . For a complete and comprehensive test that looks at a wide range of SNiPs you can order direct via 23andme at http://www.23andme.com/annepemberton

It is important to also run other test panels as appropriate to ensure we are identifying any areas of dysfunction and / or imbalances that may impede progress and to fine-tune your programme and / or monitor your progress.

Tests I may recommend:

Optimal Nutritional Evaluation (Genova Diagnostics)

This test measures your complete profile of amino acids, Essential fatty acids, Minerals and antioxidants. Amino acids are the building block of life. They support body repair, mood, nerve function, detoxification and digestion. Essential fatty acids are crucial for regeneration and maintenance of cell membranes. They are also crucial for brain health. Minerals regulate many body processes and support enzyme actions. Antioxidants are responsible for reducing free radical damage or oxidation of cells that can speed up the ageing process.

GI Effects:

This is a state of the Art test for the evaluation of digestive health. This test measures the DNA of the microbial population within the gut and also the ability to digest, assimilate and absorb nutrients from food. Once the presence of Fungi. Mould, Parasites and / or bacteria have been identified targeted therapy can commence. SIgA, inflammatory markers, digestive enzyme levels, blood and IgA reactions to Gluten, dairy, soy and egg are also checked.

Endocrine tests:

Hormones are chemical messengers within the body that tell the organs what to do and when. Poor diet, stress and toxins can all disrupt hormone levels, further depleting health. Adrenal stress index, Complete Thyroid panels, male and female sex hormone panels are all available.

Environmental medicine tests:

Test for heavy metal toxicity (urine and / or blood), mitochondrial function (blood), CFS profiles (blood), Lymphocyte sensitivity (blood) are available from Biolab and Acumen labs. These tests are all explained on Dr Sarah Myhill’s website and available through us.. http://www.doctormyhill.co.uk/wiki/Category:Test_results_and_what_they_mean

We also provide a free phlebotomy service for our regular clients. There is a £30 charge for non-patients who bring their own test kits along.

New book on digestive health just published!

The warning “Death begins in the colon.” has been ascribed to Dr. Bernard Jensen, D.C.
You can feed your body the best nutrition, but if it cannot digest and assimilate the goodness from food this may be underpinning your current health challenges.
This book was written to offer you the opportunity to make some basic changes to improve your digestion as a starting point.
